Ok, you’re a DOT NET “Application Developer”, what they used to call a “Programmer”, and you’ve just built the next “Killer App” for Windows. It might be a game, or a database application. Whatever. Maybe you hooked up with some guy on “Craig’s list” that had an IDEA, but no programming skilz.
So you built the app, and sent the guy a copy, so he could check it out, or do a little “Beta Testing”
You never hear from the guy again. And you never get paid.
The next thing you know, the guy is selling YOUR APP on the internet for fifty bucks a copy, and you see him getting rich off of all your hard work. Even if he did pay you something, he profits off of every copy sold.
What you need is COPY PROTECTION.
But wait, you’re a “Developer” with mad skilz, you can build copy protection yourself. Yep, you sure can. Go for it. I have no problem with that. Good luck to you. HOWEVER, I have already built a FREE DLL for you.
And I giving it away, free of charge. You just need to include my copy protection DLL into your application, and call the “OK TO RUN” function in your “start up” forms load event.
Pass in a few parameters to the function, and the app will not run until you get paid for it. Sure, you can give them a few free “Trial Runs” ( any number, 0 to 99 ) but eventually, they will need to register the application, and that is how you and I get paid.
You could burn 200 copies of your app to CD and hand them out at parties. Every copy will not run until it is paid for. Even if someone makes 200 copies from one of your CDs, you get paid for each one. They are just doing your marketing and distribution for you.
What if they register the app, and then install it on 5 different PCs at the office? Nope, sorry Mr. slick end-user. It needs to be registered on EACH PC.
To register the app, the end user gets a unique serial number on the registration screen. He goes to my web site, pays YOUR PRICE ( and my cut) to PayPal, and then my web site will generate an “Activation Code” for his serial number. He just needs to enter in the activation code, and the app will run fine from then on.
